Understanding our results

We want you to understand our business as well as we do and a key element of that is understanding our financial statements and reports. We recognise that it is not always easy to do in financial services especially at a time when accounting rules and practices are changing.

This is particularly true of life assurance where, because of the long-term nature of life contracts, there is a continuing debate on the correct approach to the timing of profit recognition. The adoption of IFRS for insurance business has not resolved the matter and it is generally accepted that the current standard falls short of the needs of businesses and of the market in providing either good performance metrics or valuation tools.

For our life business in the Irish Life & Permanent group we have, since 1991, applied the embedded value basis of reporting. We feel that, overall, embedded value provides the best available measure of economic value added in our life business and it is an important tool for us in managing that business.
